Bob Schieffer College of Communication

Schieffer Communication Students

Throughout his long and respected CBS network television journalism career, TCU alumnus and legendary "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer practiced his craft with integrity, civility and tenacity.

In the Bob Schieffer College of Communication, we too stand for integrity, civility and tenacity. As a faculty, we are nationally recognized scholars and practitioners dedicated to guiding students to success in classrooms domestically and abroad, and in award-winning student agencies and student media. With our students, we study and practice effective, ethical, creative communication in all its forms – interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, rhetorical and mass-mediated through advertising, film, journalism and public relations. We create effective messages with words, visual imagery and sounds that may be presented in formats ranging from speeches to debates, Tweets, news stories, blogs, documentaries, public relations campaigns, radio broadcasts and live sports videocasts. We study the processes by which these many types of messages are sent and received so that we understand the effects and meanings of communication on individuals, families, organizations, culture and society.

The college includes four departments: Communication Studies; Film, Television and Digital Media; Journalism; and Strategic Communication.

The Communication Studies Department is home to an award-winning forensics and debate program and to a thriving master’s degree program with a particular strength in teaching and research about interpersonal communication.

The Film, Television and Digital Media Department offers two majors. The first focuses on the film and television industry’s production practices, and the second teaches students to produce both live and remote sports events. The department also contains KTCU Radio that features programming by students.

The Journalism Department engages students in reporting and producing news messages in a multimedia environment; students work on a variety of news platforms, including TCU, Skiff, Image magazine and TCU News Now. The department is also home to the Texas Center for Community Journalism that provides workshops and training for community-based journalists from around the state.

In the Strategic Communication Department, students learn the theories and practices of advertising, public relations and new media to meet the strategic goals of organizations. The Roxo student advertising and public relations agency offers students hands-on experience producing campaigns for a variety of clients.

Our priorities for support include:

• Off-campus Experiential Learning, including our Washington, D.C., internship semester and travel to key professional conferences and events;
• Visiting Professionals in Residence so that students can learn about ever-changing communication professions from those who excel in them;
• Student Scholarships; and
• Endowed and Named Faculty Chairs and Professorships.
