Horned Frogs Rack Up 468 ATP Points to Conclude Impressive Summer on Tour

TCU pocketed seven ATP Challenger or ITF championships

FORT WORTH – Already among the most viable options for college players pursuing a shot at the pros, TCU men's tennis enjoyed a summer to remember in 2023.

TCU collected a combined 468 ATP points between six members of its 2022-2023 roster from June-August. The group pocketed seven ATP Challenger or ITF championships, reached 10 tournament finals and advanced to the semifinals on 14 occasions. Four members of the six-man contingent cracked the top-800 of the ATP singles or doubles rankings.

The Horned Frogs' top earner was fifth year senior Jake Fearnley

Fearnley accounted for 216 of TCU's points. His opening round doubles victory at The Championships, Wimbledon 2023 on July 6 was worth 125 points while he tacked on an additional 90 two weeks earlier via his Rothesay Open Men's Doubles Championship.

A two-time ITA doubles All-American, Fearnley is now entrenched as one of the top players in the world. The Edinburgh, Scotland native is in possession of the No. 273 ATP doubles ranking as he begins his final season in Fort Worth.

Fearnley has ample opportunity to amplify his ATP rankings further. He qualified for the ATP Challenger Tour Accelerator Programme by virtue of finishing 19th in the final ITA singles rankings in 2022-2023.

While Fearnley brought home the lion's share of ATP points, Pedro Vives undoubtedly was TCU's biggest riser.

He commenced the 2023 campaign with a universal tennis rating (UTR) of 13.35. Vives enters his junior season as TCU's highest-rated player after skyrocketing to a 13.90 UTR over his two-month stay across the pond.

Originally from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Vives gained a combined 2,196 spots in the ATP rankings. Vives ascended 1,136 places in singles. He began the summer ranked No. 1,811 on May 22 following TCU's run to the semifinals of the NCAA D1 Men's Tennis Championship. Vives now enters the fall portion of the 2023-2024 season with a career-high ranking of No. 675. He also leaped from No. 1,961 to No. 901 in doubles.

Vives advanced to the quarterfinals or beyond in nine tournaments to fuel his rise through the rankings. He won the M25 Roda de Bara doubles championship on July 10. Preceding the doubles triumph were semifinal runs at the M25 Mungia and M25 Bakio in June. Vives' singles success was highlighted by consecutive runner-up finishes in Mungia and at the M25 Martos.

No Horned Frog bagged more titles, however, than Sander Jong

The 2023 graduate nabbed two championships apiece in singles and doubles in a quartet of M15 tournaments in western Europe. Jong captured his first professional chalice on June 25 after winning the M15 Saarlouis singles championship in Germany. He followed up the effort with two more titles a week later, sweeping the singles and doubles championships at the M15 Alkmaar. Jong punctuated his summer with a pair of landmark doubles performances in July. The Amsterdam native triumphed at the M15 Mentzingen on July 17, then stacked 50 ATP points behind a run to the finals of the Amersfoort Challenger seven days later.

Jong climbed to No. 602 in the ATP doubles rankings and is now ranked 665th in singles. He augmented his UTR to a career-best 13.96 as well.

The designation of being TCU's highest-ranked singles player, though, still belongs to Jack Pinnington. The sophomore climbed to No. 601 on the heels of winning the M25 Roehampton singles championship, his fourth career ITF title. Pinnington, who has been ranked as high as No. 489, received 25 ATP points with the victory to bring his summer haul to 31.

Fellow Brit Lui Maxted followed a similarly encouraging trend as his countryman ahead of his third season in purple. The 2022 ITA National Fall Championships runner-up in doubles, Maxted again proved to be one of the sport's rising talents in the two-player realm. Maxted picked up nine ATP points on the strength of a semifinal showing at the M15 Los Angeles and quarterfinal appearances at the M25 Southaven and M15 Lakewood. Though particularly keen in doubles, Maxted made a notable leap in singles. He sprung 137 spots in the ATP singles and played his way through to the semifinals of the M15 Irvine in June.

Sophomore Sebastian Gorzny also reached double figures in ATP points. Gorzny advanced to the semifinals of the M25 Wichita in June to attain eight of his 10 points. He defeated ITF world junior No. 1 Bruno Kuzuhara and avenged an NCAA semifinal defeat to Ohio State sophomore Alexander Bernard during his tournament run. Gorzny, from Austin, Texas, was among TCU's most notable movers in the ATP singles rankings. He leapt from No. 1,656 to No. 1,014 in the ATP singles rankings.

Pinnington's performance in his hometown London at the M25 Roehampton signaled the conclusion of TCU's shared summer season. All 10 members of the Horned Frogs' 2023-2024 roster have returned to campus for the start of fall practices.

TCU anticipates announcing its 2023-2024 schedule in the coming weeks.
