Trio Of Freshmen Invited To USA Baseball CNT Trials

Abeldt, Bowen and Silva will take part in the training camp

FORT WORTH – A trio of TCU baseball freshmen have been invited to take part in the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp. Catcher Karson Bowen, shortstop Anthony Silva and reliever Ben Abeldt will don the National Team jersey this summer.

Abeldt has been one of the top relievers on the squad this season, leading TCU with 31 appearances on the year. He is 3-3 with 66 strikeouts in just 52.0 innings of work. A member of the Big 12 All-Freshman squad, Abeldt is limiting opponents to a .236 average. He has held opponents scoreless in 12 of his last 14 appearances and has surrendered just two runs in his last 24 innings of work.

Bowen, a veteran of USA Baseball National Teams, has been a staple behind the plate this season starting 54 games as part of 53 appearances. The freshman leads the team with a .361 average. He has 15 doubles and six home runs as part of 75 hits on the season to go along with 46 RBI and nine stolen bases. Behind the plate, he has caught 13 runners stealing and has registered two pickoffs. Bowen, a Big 12 honorable mention all-conference performer and a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman squad, was named a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

Silva has started 59 games at shortstop this season and ranks third on the team with a .335 average. A second-team all-conference performer, Silva has been named a Freshman All-American by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball. As part of 73 hits on the season, Silva has 10 doubles and seven home runs to go along with 47 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

The Stars vs. Stripes series is a product of the Collegiate National Team Training Camp that features 56 of the premier non-draft-eligible collegiate players in the country. The entirety of the Collegiate National Team Training Camp will take place at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. and begins on June 23. The four-game Stars vs. Stripes series will kick off on June 25. USA Baseball will announce a final 26-man roster on June 30 to compete in the 20th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series and the 44th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Championship Series.

TCU has a successful history with USA Baseball. Jake Arrieta was the first Horned Frog to earn a spot on the National Team roster, doing so in 2006, the same year former head coach Jim Schlossnagle served as an assistant coach. In 2010, Kyle Winkler pitched for Team USA. TCU had a pair of representatives in 2011 as Josh Elander and Andrew Mitchell participated on the squad. The Frogs had three player representatives in 2013 as Riley Ferrell, Brandon Finnegan and Preston Morrison were on the squad that was managed by Schlossnagle. Evan Skoug earned a spot on the team in 2016 and Sean Wymer was a member of the squad in 2017. Former associate head coach Bill Mosiello served as an assistant on the 2017 U18 squad. In the summer of 2022, Brayden Taylor earned a spot on the 26-man roster, while River Ridings attended the training camp.
