FORT WORTH – On the heels of a historic season, TCU beach volleyball received two AVCA postseason awards for the first time in program history. Head coach
Hector Gutierrez was named the AVCA Coach of the Year while the standout No. 1 pairing of
Daniela Alvarez and
Tania Moreno were awarded AVCA Pair of the Year honors.
The back-to-back CCSA Coach of the Year, Gutierrez was awarded AVCA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. He led the team to a 37-3 record on the year. Along the way, the team collected a CCSA Conference Title and an NCAA Final Four appearance. Under his direction, the TCU beach volleyball team received its first No. 1 ranking in the AVCA Coaches and CollegeBeachVB.com polls, a ranking the team would hold for six consecutive weeks. He coached the team to 20 ranked victories and 27 sweeps this season. Gutierrez has transformed the TCU beach volleyball program into an NCAA tournament team over the past three seasons. Throughout his time at TCU, five Horned Frogs have received seven AVCA All-American honors.
The AVCA Pair of the Year of
Daniela Alvarez and
Tania Moreno had nothing short of an amazing season at TCU. The duo was named AVCA First-Team All-Americans and received AVCA Top-Flight honors for the third consecutive season as well as racking up numerous accolades over the season that included two unanimous CCSA Conference Postseason Awards. The pairing was named CCSA Pair of the Year for the second consecutive season and named to the all-conference team for the third straight season. Before the season began, the duo was named to the CCSA Preseason All-Conference team for the third consecutive season. The pairing also claimed three CCSA Pair of the Week honors (March 8, March 15, March 29) and an AVCA/CBVB Pair of the Week recognition (March 27). The Spanish National Team phenoms concluded the season with a near perfect 34-1 record from the No. 1 position. The duo faced the best pairings from across the country and owned a 18-1 record over ranked opponents.
Alvarez and Moreno set a program record for the best regular season (28-1) by any pairing at TCU. The back-to-back CCSA Pair of the Year duo also holds two other TCU program records: career wins as pairing at 88-16 (.846) and career ranked wins at 44-14 (.759) They achieved both records over the course of just three seasons.
