DALLAS -- The Football Writers Association of America has named TCU Head Coach
Sonny Dykes as its Super 11 Coach of the Year while also recognizing TCU Football Communications with a Super 11 Award for its excellence in all aspects of media relations for the 2022 season.
The voting for both awards was done by the FWAA's national membership of journalists, broadcasters, publicists, photographers and key executives in all areas of college football.
With the openness of the program under Dykes, who won 10 National Coach of the Year awards, TCU was a popular destination to visit throughout the year for local and national media. In addition to Dykes, TCU's coordinators, assistant coaches and every player on the roster were available, including game weeks and postgame. If in-person access was not an option for media, phone calls and Zooms were done. Team practices were also open to media.
"TCU Coach
Sonny Dykes winning the Super 11 Coach Award is significant," FWAA Executive Director Steve Richardson said. "It clearly shows a coach can give good access to his program and win big even in his first year at the school. Coaches don't have to isolate their players from the media in order to play for the national championship."
The extensive coverage and media requests began well before TCU's first game and continued throughout its run to the College Football Playoff. During the month leading up to its CFP Semifinal win over Michigan and in preparation for the CFP National Championship, multiple ESPN crews were stationed simultaneously in TCU's football facilities for coverage of the Horned Frogs.
TCU's media attention extended beyond the team to its high-profile players as quarterback
Max Duggan won the Davey O'Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award while finishing as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.
Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson won the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back, and
Derius Davis was the recipient of the Jet Award as the country's Return Specialist of the Year. Offensive lineman
Steve Avila was a consensus All-American as five Horned Frogs received All-America honors.
