TCU Equestrian Leads the Way with Four NCEA End-of-Year Awards

There Horned Frogs honored as NCEA Riders of the Year

WACO, Texas – The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) unveiled its complete list of end-of-year awards on Thursday, and once more in 2022-2023, TCU made program and national history.

Following a vote of the head coaches, three Horned Frogs were selected as NCEA Riders of the Year. Jessica McAllister was honored in Horsemanship, Mattie Dukes received the recognition in Reining and Ashleigh Scully was named Co-Flat Rider of the Year.

Additionally, head western coach Melissa Dukes was chosen by her peers as the NCEA Dual Discipline Western Coach of the Year.

The three NCEA Rider of the Year selections were the most of any program. TCU also became the first team to sweep the Western discipline.

Matie Dukes and Scully are the first Horned Frogs to be named NCEA Rider of the Year in their respective discipline. McAllister joins Laska Anderson (2018) as one of only two athletes in the 17-year history of the program to earn NCEA Horsemanship Rider of the Year credentials.

Melissa Dukes is the first TCU assistant coach to garner NCEA Dual Discipline Coach of the Year accolades. The NCEA began honoring assistants in its annual end-of-year award roundup in 2021.

Through Melissa Dukes' leadership, TCU manifested the most dominant Western season of any program. The Horned Frogs produced a 14-1-2 combined Western overall record and 6-0 mark at home. The Horned Frogs were even more impressive n Horsemanship, as they rode to a 15-1-1 record in the event. Under Dukes' guidance, TCU produced an NCEA-leading eight Western All-American selections, six of which were of the first team flavor.

Mattie Dukes and McAllister were the lynchpins of the sustained success. Both athletes were honored as Big 12 Rider of the Year in their disciplines.

McAllister was tabbed a first team honoree in both Horsemanship and Reining, becoming the first four-time first team All-American to pass through Fort Worth. Horsemanship was undoubtedly her specialty. McAllister produced TCU's highest season total average score (76) and led the way with five regular season Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors.

Dukes boasts an equal number of NCEA All-American citations. She was honored as a first teamer in Reining and was second team recipient in Horsemanship. Dukes concluded her senior year with a 28-5-1 overall record. She led TCU in cumulative victories as well as total wins in both Western events.

Few athletes were as versatile as Scully throughout her junior season. She racked up a team-leading 22 Jumping Seat victories split evenly between Flat and Fences. Scully was at her peak during the regular season, as she concluded TCU's 13-meet slate with a 20-4 combined overall record with five MOP's. In April, Scully carved out her own section in TCU's fact book. She became the first Jumping Seat competitor in program history to be named a first team All-American in both Flat and Fences in the same season.
