Rifle Heads To Akron Chasing National Title

Horned Frogs have three national titles in program history

FORT WORTH – The TCU women's rifle team, making its 17th straight appearance in the National Championships, is taking aim at its fourth national title. TCU is the back-to-back defending Air Rifle National Champions.

The championships get underway from Akron, Ohio Friday, March 10 with smallbore and concludes with air rifle on Saturday, March 12. Both days' events will take place at John A. Rhodes Arena on the Akron campus.

Making their way to Akron to compete in the championship match for TCU are Abigail Gordon, Stephanie Grundsoee, Kristen Hemphill, Julie Johannessen and Katie Zaun.

Last season the Horned Frogs finished second overall at the National Championships. They did head home with a National Championship trophy, claiming their fourth Air Rifle title (2010, 2012, 2021 and 2022).

TCU has three national titles in program history. In 2010, the Horned Frogs became the first-ever all-female squad to take home the National Championship. They did so again in 2012 and 2019. In 2013, the squad took home their first-ever Smallbore National Championship. They added a smallbore title in 2019. Sarah Scherer is the only Horned Frog to take home an individual title, doing so in smallbore in 2010 and 2012.

TCU qualified for the championships in the No. 1 spot. The Horned Frogs four-score total was nearly 10 points higher than No. 2 West Virginia. Also competing for the title are Alaska-Fairbanks, Murray State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Nebraska and Air Force.

All five shooters competing for TCU rank in the Top-11 nationally in season air rifle average. Grundsoee, Hemphill and Johannessen have all fired a 600 in their collegiate careers. Grundsoee sits fourth nationally with an average of 597.44 followed closely by Johannessen (597.25) and Zaun (596.40). Hemphill is 10th with an average of 595.36 and Gordon 11th at 595.25.
