TCU Qualifies NCAA-Leading Five Players for ITA National Fall Championships

Gorzny and Vives win ITA Texas Regional doubles championship

FORT WORTH – TCU men's tennis made yet another addition to its decade of dominance following the conclusion of the ITA Texas Regional.

The Horned Frogs qualified a program record and NCAA-leading five players to the ITA National Fall Championships, held from Nov. 1-5 in San Diego.

Pedro Vives and Jack Pinnington were awarded singles selections. Vives received an automatic berth as a regional finalist while Pinnington was one of just two Division I players to garner an ITA-issued wild card to the 32-man tournament.

TCU was also the only team in the country to qualify two doubles teams after sweeping both Texas Region slots. Vives and Sebastian Gorzny were tabbed doubles champions after defeating teammates Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted in the finale.

Vives and Gorzny's run gave TCU its second ITA Texas Regional doubles title in three years. Vives and former All-American Juan Carlos Aguilar claimed the crown in 2021.

TCU has now sent four doubles pairs to the grand finale of fall tennis over the last three seasons. Maxted, making his second straight trip to southern California, was a regional finalist alongside Sander Jong in 2022. The duo went on to finish as the national runner-up after winning four consecutive matches in San Diego.

Vives fell to No. 17 Micah Braswell of Texas, 4-6, 4-6, in Tuesday's final. The junior landed 13 service aces over the course of the match but could not land an elusive break point. Braswell won all four deuce points on serve and secured breaks leading 2-1 in the opening frame and tied 3-3 in the second set.

Ranked No. 82 nationally, Vives has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the college tennis ranks this fall. He has notched five ITA top-40 wins since September. He ousted No. 16 Pierre Yves-Bailly (Texas) in straight sets in the Regional quarterfinals before sending off Baylor's 38th-ranked Tadeas Paroulek to punch his ticket to San Diego. Vives won the Fort Worth PFT 25k on Sept. 9 at the expense of Pinnington, the No. 26 ITA singles player, then promptly defeated No. 9 Inaki Montes-De La Torre of Virginia and No. 11 Cannon Kingsley of Ohio State during qualifying at the ATP Cary Challenger.

Pinnington was duly rewarded with a wild card. His fall singles record stands at 8-2, with seven of his wins coming in straight sets and three at the expense of ranked opponents. The sophomore reached the semifinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Sept. 23 and advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships two weeks later in Tulsa. Pinnington's exits from the ITA All-American Championships and ITA Texas Regional came with asterisks. Illness forced him to withdraw in Oklahoma. He led No. 45 Jonah Braswell of Texas 6-2, 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional and was serving for the match before sustaining a sprained ankle that rendered him compromise.

Gorzny and Vives improved their career doubles record to 26-9 following their quintet of Regional wins.

Chan and Maxted are newly-minted partners but look the part of a veteran pair. They are 9-4 this fall and played their way through qualifying and onto the ITA All-American Championships main draw.

The ITA National Fall Championships tournament draws, match times and court assignments will be released in the coming days on WeAreCollegeTennis.com
