TCU Secures Four Automatic Berths to ITA National Fall Championships

Horned Frogs sweep doubles semifinals of ITA Texas Regional

FORT WORTH – With fall tennis' stakes at its highest, TCU reaffirmed its status as a national power once more.

The Horned Frogs won three ITA Texas Regional semifinal matches on Monday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU in turn secured four automatic berths to the ITA National Fall Championships, held from Nov. 1-5 in San Diego.

TCU swept both doubles matches to set up a Horned Frogs vs. Horned Frogs finale on Tuesday.

The 38th-ranked tandem of Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted ousted UTSA's Jackson Ross and Garrett Skelly, 6-4, 7-5, to punch TCU's first pair of tickets to southern California.

Pedro Vives then defeated No. 38 Tadeas Paroulek of Baylor in a 6-7 [3-7], 6-4, 6-3 singles comeback.

Vives and Sebastian Gorzny matched up with Alan Magadan and Tomas Pinho of UTSA in the second doubles semifinal. The Roadrunners duo was no match for Gorzny and Vives, ranked 13th nationally. Gorzny and Vives won nine consecutive games between the first and second sets on their way to a 6-1, 6-4 walloping.

TCU clinched its second ITA Texas Regional doubles championship in three years and third straight National Fall Championships berth with Monday's showing.

Vives and former Horned Frog All-American Juan Carlos Aguilar claimed the crown in 2021.

Maxted is headed to the ITA National Fall Championships for the second straight season. He and Sander Jong were finalists at the 2022 edition of the tournament and went on to finish as the fall season's national runner-up.

Vives becomes the first Horned Frog to play for the singles title since Aguilar won it in 2021. He faces No. 17 Micah Braswell of Texas in Tuesday's championship.

Chan and Maxted built a 3-0 edge in the opening frame behind two breaks before serving out the frame. They alternated games with UTSA to the tune of a 5-5 gridlock, then picked up one final break point. Maxted closed the show on an ace with TCU leading 40-30 in the 12th-and-final game.

Vives and former Frog Paroulek duked it out simultaneously with the first doubles clash. The junior opened up a 5-3 lead, only for Paroulek to break two games later and force an eventual tiebreaker. Vives, No. 82 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, grew tougher as a physical match wore on. He snapped a 3-3 gridlock with a break in set two and finished on serve. A rain shower forced the third set indoors. After playing to another 3-3 tie to begin the decisive frame, Vives broke Paroulek on his final two serves to sew up the win.

Gorzny and Vives dropped their opening game on receive tied at 40-40. They promptly won the set's final six games and built an insurmountable 3-0 head start in the second-and-final set.

TCU has now won a Lone Star State-leading 30 matches through five-of-six days at the tournament. Of the victories, 27 have been main draw matches.

Chan and Maxted have accounted for 29 combined fall victories. Maxted leads TCU in total wins behind a 14-6 combined overall record. He is 9-3 in doubles, with six of his wins coming alongside Chan. Maxted owns a 43-17 career doubles record and 22-8 mark in fall tournaments.

The run to the regional doubles finale augments an impressive start to Chan's freshman campaign. The Markham, Ontario native has entered the winner's circle 13 times through three invitationals.

Vives has enjoyed as impressive a fall as any player nationally. Paroulek represented the fifth ITA top-40 player he has defeated since September. He ousted No. 16 Pierre Yves-Bailly (Texas) in straight sets in Sunday's quarterfinals. Vives bettered No. 9 Inaki Montes-De La Torre of Virginia and Ohio State's 11th-ranked Cannon Kingsley during the ATP Cary Challenger on Sept. 10-11. He also won the Fort Worth PFT 25k on Sept. 9 at the expense of TCU's 26th-ranked Jack Pinnington.

Gorzny and Vives improved their career doubles mark as partners to 22-9.

The singles final is slated for a 10 a.m. first serve on Tuesday. The doubles championship is set to follow at 3 p.m.
