Preview: TCU Men's Tennis to Host ITA Texas Regional

Tournament runs from Oct. 19-24 at the outdoor Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center

FORT WORTH – College tennis' landmark events have made a habit of working their way to Fort Worth over the last decade.

Since 2015, TCU has hosted 19 NCAA Tournament matches, eight consecutive ITA Kickoff Weekends and three ITA-sanctioned fall invitationals.

And TCU is set to add another marquee tournament to its venue portfolio over the ensuing week.

The Horned Frogs are hosting the ITA Texas Regional from Oct. 19-24 on the outdoor courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Around 100 singles players and 64 doubles teams spanning the entirety of the Division I Texas tennis landscape are taking part in the tournament. Schools with player representation include Big 12 foes Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech, former Southwest Conference rival Texas A&M and a cluster of mid-major programs, including Abilene Christian, Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UTSA and UT Arlington.

The ITA Texas Regional field is as robust as any of the 12 regional championship events taking place across the country. The singles main draw features 15 nationally ranked players while the doubles bracket includes up to seven top-60 tandems.

Regional championships are perhaps the most important event on teams' schedules. Champions and finalists in both singles and doubles automatically qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships, which run from Nov. 1-5 in San Diego, California.

TCU has cleaned house at the ITA Texas Regional over the past two years. Last fall, the Horned Frogs qualified three players for the grand finale of fall tennis. Jake Fearnley received a wild card in singles on the strength of four victories while Lui Maxted and Sander Jong were doubles finalists on their way to a national runner-up finish. In 2021, Juan Carlos Aguilar was crowned singles champion and Jong hoisted the doubles chalice alongside Pedro Vives.

Fall Season in Review

Jack PinningtonThe sophomore has been TCU's most impressive singles player this fall. He most recently advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 4-5 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Pinnington swept No. 13 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg of Virginia for the second time in as many tournaments in the opening round. He followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Illinois' Kenta Miyoshi in the round of 32. Pinnington was set to battle No. 87 Jay Friend of Arizona for a ticket to the quarterfinals before he was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. Pinnington kicked off his second-year campaign in Fort Worth with a run to the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the Battle in the Bay Classic in September. He leads TCU with five singles wins. Of the victories, four were sweeps while three have come at the expense of ranked opponents.

Sebastian GorznyGorzny justified his automatic berth to the ITA All-American Championships main singles draw with a 6-2, 6-1 walloping of No. 11 Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois in the first round. The sweep signified his highest-ranked collegiate victory. Gorzny then dropped a closely-contested battle to No. 24 Etienne Donnet (Louisville), 7-6 [8-6], 3-6, 2-6. He joined Pinnington in the Battle in the Bay Classic singles quarterfinals. In doubles, Gorzny and Vives pocketed an opening-round win at the ITA All-American Championships. They are the highest-ranked tandem competing at the ITA Texas Regional.

Pedro VivesHe currently holds the fourth-highest universal tennis rating (UTR) among all college players at 14.11. Vives has bagged four professional titles since June. Vives was forced to play qualifying singles at the ITA All-American Championships due to his preseason ranking. He won his first two matches, including a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Baylor's 114th-ranked Zsombor Velcz before coming up short in the third-and-final round in a ranked-vs.-ranked battle with No. 63 Wojtek Marek of USC. Vives sports an 81-32 career collegiate record. The junior is 45-16 in doubles.

Lui MaxtedRegarded as a doubles specialist, Maxted has turned heads in singles through two fall tournaments. He won two qualifying matches at the ITA All-American Championships and picked up the highest-ranked win of his career in the first round of the Battle in the Bay Classic, defeating No. 54 Alex Petrov (Illinois) in a three-set comeback. Maxted has registered a team-leading eight victories this fall. Five of his wins have been in doubles. He and Duncan Chan won twice in doubles qualifying in Tulsa and earned a wild card onto the main draw, where they recorded a consolation victory. Maxted and Pinnington played their way into the Battle in the Bay Classic semifinals despite having never played together previously. Maxted is 20-5 in doubles in fall invitationals.

Tomas JirousekThe fifth year senior played his first fall tournament in three seasons in Tulsa. Jirousek, who has traditionally played professionally overseas in the fall, claimed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Matthew Thomson of Wake Forest in the consolation singles draw. He and Pinnington proved themselves a possible pairing in doubles as the spring season approaches. They came three points shy of ousting eventual semifinalists Holden Koons and DK Suresh (Wake Forest) in a 6-4, 1-6, [7-10] loss.

Duncan ChanOne of three freshman on TCU's roster, Chan is second for the team-lead in fall victories (seven). He produced a 4-1 record at the inaugural US College Cup in Torreon, Mexico on Sept. 22-24. Chan's performance was highlighted by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 over Baylor's Ethan Muza on the first night of singles play.

Julian AlonsoAlonso picked up his first pair of wins in purple and white in Mexico. He defeated Daniel Morozov and Jose Maria Rastrojo of Abilene Christian in doubles alongside Luke Swan via a 6-1 result and later bettered ACU's Cesar Barranquero in singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Kaj QuirijnsHe won twice in doubles at the US College Cup Invitational, notably downing Justin Braverman and Christopher Frantzen of Baylor, 6-3, with Chan as his partner.

Luke SwanThe junior played five matches in Mexico and earned his second career doubles victory in tandem with doubles. Swan, who accepted a preferred walk-on invitation to join the team in 2022, is one of 10 members on the inaugural ITA Student-Athlete Council.
